The recent celebratory news coming out across several YouTube channels is that “only” 255,000 (give or take) braced pistols have been registered with the ATF as an SBR. Many channels are pointing out that, percentage-wise, that is a low number.
And, to be honest, it is a pretty low number. When you factor in that somewhere between 20 – 40 million of these things are floating around, 255K is a low number.
The problem is that there are still 255,000+/- people who have now admitted that they believed they had a way to go around the NFA. While it is a comparatively low number, percentage-wise, there are now hundreds of thousands of people who basically said “Yes, this is an SBR.”
Hundreds of thousands is NOT a small number when that’s taken into account, and it gets worse.
Why? Because now the ATF has the names, numbers, addresses, and whatever else is found on the form (I’ve never filled one out, so I’m not sure exactly what’s on one) to register an SBR from people who basically admitted that they believe a braced pistol is an SBR.
If you don’t think the BATFE has the desire and ability to exploit those folks if given the chance then you’re not paying attention.
Now, I hope I’m wrong and that there isn’t anything useful here for them. But, the folks at the top of the ATF and anti-gun politicians currently in office hate us and the fact that we’re armed.
They want us disarmed so they can take advantage of us however possible and I wouldn’t put anything past them at this point.
I’m not a lawyer, so anything I say here should not be construed to be legal advice.
