The 7mm Remington Magnum chambering is an excellent cartridge for elk hunting. The 7mm Rem. Mag. is good for elk depending on the ammunition you choose from 300 to 500 yards. From 0 - 300 yards the Remington 150 grain core-lokt loading is more than enough to get the job done on any size elk effectively. All the way out to 500 yards on a windy day the 162 grain SST Hornady loading in the 7mm Rem. Mag. will work as well. For the best compromise of power, recoil and distance the 7mm Rem. Mag. 154 grain SST loading by Hornady is a real good choice as best overall elk performer in the powerful 7mm Remington Magnum.

If you look at all the ballistics charts to this point you will notice that all of the 7mm Rem. Mag. loadings are fairly even, the slight advantage goes to the Hornady 154 grain SST loading here as an elk cartridge for the simple fact there is a slight bullet drop difference at 500 yards. Once again it is the developements in high performance bullets being used in factory ammunition that pushes the 7mm Rem. Mag. cartridge to this level of performance for Elk hunting.
